Wonder what other rules Good would have the students defy? (Cardinal News 10/15/21) Don’t wear seat belts? What about the speed limit sign outside the school? This is a well written opinion piece about the congressman’s call for anti-masking disobedience at Rappahannock’s high school, notwithstanding the facts. This piece deserves your attention. It should make all of us, regardless of persuasion, think twice about what each of us expects of our elected leaders, today and tomorrow. The American child-care industry is in crisis, according to a report just out from the Treasury Department, entitled The Economics of Child Care Supply in the United States (Sept. 2021). Bottom line, the sector is down 126,000 workers since Covid began, and more are leaving largely because of low wages. Making matters worse, child care providers are also considering closing down, while parents’ inability to find affordable child care is preventing them from fully returning to work. The report is a must-read to better understand why the Biden administration has made a comprehensive child care proposal a key part of its Build Back Better package. The Biden initiative responds to a critical need of American families. So why aren't Republicans supporting it? Child Care Tax Credit Update: the October check is in the mail! (CNET 10/15/21)The fourth monthly check of the new child care tax credit was sent out by the IRS last Friday! As NewRuralVirginia reported previously, this credit is a major boost for families with children. The linked article from CNET is a great primer on using the tax credit effectively, including what to do if you were eligible but didn't receive a check, how to access IRS's new Child Care Tax Credit Portal, and how to get on the list if you didn't file taxes last year (yes, you are still entitled). And if you know someone with children but who may not have access to the internet, make sure they know about this critical information. Last of all, don't forget that this tax credit is not yet permanent. The Democrats are trying to make it a permanent benefit through legislation that will be a part of the next infrastructure bill. With elections around the corner, you may want to check where the candidates stand on this question.
